BILL SOFIELD — the designer who put his imprint on Gucci stores and who is now creating Tom Ford shops globally — always needs a project. His current obsession is a modernist house designed by Edward Durell Stone in Bedford Hills, N.Y., that he said was “in desperate need of restoration” when he bought it a few years ago.“I have a habit of finding houses that are on the brink of destruction,” he said.
But to take this project on, he is now about to relinquish Balcastle, a historic brick and limestone house in Southampton, N.Y., that was modeled after an Irish castle.
“It’s really like a benign eyesore,” Mr. Sofield said affectionately. The house stood out when it was built in the 1880s, he added, because at that time, “It would have been so extravagant.”
The asking price is $4.25 million. Rob Morea, of Great Jones Realty, and Rosemary Renna, of Brown Harris Stevens, have the listing.
With its master suite in the crenellated tower, the house sits on half an acre of landscaped gardens in the heart of the village. Mr. Sofield bought it in 1998 and spent years restoring it, taking out dropped ceilings and a Swedish-modern kitchen.
